Entry 13: Crafting the Giuseppe Trimboli Lira - A Lira du Peppe Trimboli

Basilia Staltari

Location: Calabria, Italy

Date: Present Day

During the decade comprising of the 1890’s, several Trimboli farmers and millers developed an innate musical passion towards the lira. Peppe, his two brothers Antonio and Domenico (Micu) and their cousin Francesco (‘u Barilli’) worked and lived in rural Siderno, within the neigbouring districts (‘contrada’) of Monaco, Oliveto, Flavia, Campo and Capofilipo. They all shared a deep, soul connection to the song of the lira.

Today, the instrument Peppe played is renowned as an ancient ‘lira Calabrese’ and continues to be handcrafted using techniques preserved from the past with components made from materials found in nature.

As craftsman Vincenzo Piazzetta demonstrates in the video, the process of making a lira starts with carving a chamber into a block of cherry wood.
